Taylor HendersonShawn Mendes evoked sympathy from most of LGBTQ twitter yesterday when he addressed the persisting rumors surrounding his sexuality.
The 20-year-old's orientation has been a running joke on the internet for years, commentators usually critiquing his hand mannerisms, body language, or music tastes to conclude that singer must be closeted. Mendes confessed that he watches the memes and, even though he knows there's nothing wrong with being gay, he sometimes tries to change his behavior to appear more masculine.
"In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone—like a girl—in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” Mendes explained. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me."
Mendes continued, "You fucking guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out.’ That’s something that kills people. That’s how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I’m gay?"
The sentiment evoked sympathy from many LGBTQ fans, especially those who remember what it was like to monitor and modify our own behavior in an attempt to evade ridicule from homophobes.
But while most of gay twitter saw the error of their ways, not everyone read the room before throwing in their two cents.
"Shawn Mendes is not gay, or at least not yet," began RuPaul's Drag Race choreographer and judge Todrick Hall hours after the interview was published. "And he may never be...but one thing is certain, if he EVER comes out. I've got dibs."
"Hope to marry, sorry meet you someday," he concluded in the now-deleted tweet.
Twitter was not having it.
Hall has since apologized for the tweet, but it certainly proved that it's time to retire the speculation and jokes about Shawn Mendes sexuality once and for all.
