The film "validates the feelings that a lot of queer young people have that back when I was young, were never validated," Borelli told PRIDE.

The Thing About Harry, Freeform's new romantic comedy premiering the day after Valentine's Day, takes an age-old formula and gives it a queer twist.

When straight-laced student Sam (Jake Borelli) is forced to drive his high-school bully Harry (Niko Terho) across the country for their mutual friend's engagement party, he's more than prepared to hate him and judge him for his numerous fleeting romances. But things come to a screeching halt (quite literally) when Harry comes out as pansexual.

"The truth is, I admired you," Harry confesses to Sam. "You were out in Liberty, Missouri. Me? I was just too scared. That's why I made fun of you. You know that, right?"

Suddenly, Sam's relationship with the annoying jock gets complicated, especially when the sexual tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Premiering this Saturday on Freeform and Hulu, The Thing About Harry is a charming love story that'll make you laugh, shed a few tears, and celebrate two men stumbling through life with their hearts on their sleeves, just trying to find love.

PRIDE sat down for a chat with the film's star Jake Borelli and kiki'd over the power of queer love on screen, the value in LGBTQ+ people telling our own stories, working with Peter Paige, the lasting impact of landmark LGBTQ+ series Queer A Folk, and a few of the more colorful scenes from the movie.

PRIDE: Every time we post about The Thing About Harry on PRIDE, it gets a really exciting response from the LGBTQ+ community. Why do you think it's resonating so much already before it's even out?

Jake Borelli: Oh my gosh. First of all, that's wonderful news. I'm so excited that people are freaking out about it as much as I am. It's really the feeling that I got when I read it is why people are so excited about it. It's this feeling of seeing a rom-com, something that is unabashedly a rom-com through and through, but that shows queer love in a way that we haven't seen it in this genre. A lot of times if there's a queer person in a rom-com, they're sort of delegated to the side character roles. The person that helps the lady buy a wedding dress or helps a story move along. Maybe they have a partner, maybe they don't. Maybe they're having sex, we don't know. This movie, I think, values our love and it shows that our love stories are important to tell too. Our love stories deserve a huge platform like the one this story is getting. I think it's amazing. I truly think it's an amazing project.

You hit the nail on the head. We're so often the best friend that teaches you something around an hour and 15 minutes into the movie. You don't think about how rare these kinds of stories are, and then it happens...

Yeah, I think as queer people when we see projects growing up, we get so used to translating it into our experience and saying, "Oh, this is something that I've felt, and that's why I liked this movie." Where this is something we do not need to translate at all, you know what I mean? I see myself so strongly in Sam and I see myself so strongly in some of the other queer characters, and for the first time, I feel seen in a project like this. This is not a coming-of-age story. This is not about coming out. It's not about shame. It's just about love, and about finding love and holding onto that once you found it. It's really beautiful.

I watched Queer As Folk in college when I was first coming out and trying to learn more about myself and Peter Paige is definitely an icon for many, many gay men. What was it like working with him and getting to be in scenes with him?

Oh, it was fantastic. When I was offered the movie and found out it was coming from Peter Paige, I freaked out, and then I read the movie and realized exactly what it was, and I said yes immediately. I jumped on the chance to work with him. And the fact that he has now, sort of, become a mentor of mine, in terms of what he represents, of what I could become as a queer person in this industry. He models a life that I didn't even know was possible for someone like me, especially when I was growing up. I didn't believe it was possible and the fact that this relationship is mirrored in the movie as well.

His character Casey is a mentor for Sam, and we get to see this cross-generational queerness and how younger gay guys and gay guys who came before them have this very special relationship that is undefined in a lot of other straight relationships. It's a relationship of mentor-mentee, but also almost like father-son or brothers, and it's something really special that was so fun to explore with him because we were exploring that same relationship on and off camera too.

the-thing-about-harry-cast-karamo-brown-peter-paige-britt-baron.jpg

Did you watch Queer As Folk when you were younger?

You know, I watched the British Queer As Folk, and it wasn't even when I was younger, it was when I was slightly older. I honestly think I was too young to watch something like that. It was groundbreaking and it was amazing, but it's obviously not geared towards a young audience and so I didn't see it when I was a kid, whereas this movie is.

This is a YA film, and it's the exact type of audience that needs to see it. Granted, I looked up to Peter so much, and I've seen Queer As Folk now and he has inspired me so strongly, and all of the work he's done with The Fosters and Good Trouble, and all the boundaries he's pushed has really made him an icon in this community, and it was so massive to get to work with him.

The love story with your character Sam and Niko Terho's character Harry is very relatable. It plays with the idea of that straight guy that many a gay men were secretly in love with in high school, and then suddenly he pops up again and there's an actual chance to be with him.

We play with a lot of these tropes that are in queer culture, and I think it's a lot of similar tropes that are played in normal rom-coms, too. You know what I mean? It's like the hot, swanky bachelor that has an airplane and a good-paying job and he comes in and you have the ability to fall in love with him. I think that's a similar trope that queer people see with all these people that they have crushes on when they're younger, but know that it's forbidden. This is a moment where we get to see that story play through the end and in an honest and very authentic way that we see both sides of it. We see in the movie why Harry was the way he was in high school. It's almost like a redemption story for him too, as well as a fantasy for Sam. It gets a lot deeper than all of that, and a lot more twists and turns, but yeah, there's certainly something interesting about using that trope.

What was your personal favorite scene in the movie?

Oh my gosh. I loved the Pride scene, just because I've been wanting to do a scene like that for long to really show what it's like inside Pride for young queer people. Especially like a very straight-laced queer person, and how Pride can bring them out of their shell and let them experience something that they don't normally allow themselves to experience. It was just so fun, the fact that we had a room full of queer people and a drag queen, and getting to play drunk. That was so fun, and it just felt like a very freeing experience. It was so fun.

That scene was one of my favorites too!

Also, Pride directed by Peter Paige was nuts.

Why was it nuts?

It was just so fun. I think it was a sense of like, when you're playing queer with people, when you're working with other people who aren't queer, I think there's always this sense of, "Are we doing this right? Are we being offensive? Are we going too far? Is this a caricature? What's the fine line there?" Where in this movie, because I'm queer and I was playing a queer character and Peter's queer, he was directing and wrote this movie, it almost felt like we had this confidence that anything we do is kind of okay because it represents our part of the queer community. We had the ability to just say, "You know what? This is how I am in a bar. This is how some queer bars are,"and just through telling our own story we were telling an authentic queer story, and there was a lot less fear involved. I think it was really beautiful.

You hear that kind of comfort a lot with women who work with women directors for the first time. It's a kind of familiarity.

Yeah, you don't have to explain anything. You don't have to translate anything. I didn't have to tell him why I had certain ideas that I had. I didn't have to say, "This is why it happened," because I'm queer and these are the things that have happened. It was just like, "Yo, Peter, this is what happened one time. Let's do it," and he's like, "Oh my God. Yes, that happened to me one time. Let's do it."You know? It was so easy.

We both know there aren't very many queer, LGBTQ+ rom-coms out there, especially when we were younger. What do you think The Thing About Harry is going to mean to people? What do you think it would have meant to you if you had this when you were in your formative years?

I think young queer people growing up now and seeing a movie like this, I think it really validates their love, and I think that it shows them that their love is worthy of a whole movie about it. And the fact that this movie is backed by Freeform and Disney, these huge companies that are really giving us a platform to tell our stories in an authentic way, I think it's so important and it validates the feelings that a lot of queer young people have, that back when I was young, were never validated.

I think it will just show so many ideas of who we can become as queer people as we get older, and to grow up in a world where that is something that's valued, I think is really important.

The Thing About Harry premieres Friday, February 15 on Freeform and Hulu. Watch the trailer below.

The viral clothing company that made rompers for men viral is, unfortunately, shuttering down.

Remember RompHim, that online clothing retailer that made tons of viral headlines in 2017 because of their gender-bending rompers for men? Well, unfortunately, it looks like they're closing the doors on their operation...for good.

"It has been an amazing run, but the time has come to close the doors on RompHim," a statement from the company, which BuzzFeed News reports was sent out to customers via email on Wednesday, read. "...thank you for everything."

RompHim broke the internet three years ago when they debuted their specialty line of rompers (an item of clothing that is usually associated with women) made specifically for men. Since their launch, men from all over have enjoyed RompHim's trendy and super fun offerings.

RompHim was also LGBTQ-inclusive, partnering with The Trevor Project back in 2018 to release a special rainbow-striped romper for Pride Month.

Although the practicality of their rompers was somewhat questionable (how the hell do you go to the bathroom in these things??), RompHim did have a cult following and their clothing offered the bland AF menswear landscape a colorful and welcome reprieve.

"We came together as a group of friends looking to answer a simple question: why were men's clothing options so limited?" reads the RompHim origin story on their official website. "Everything was either too corporate…too fratty…too "runway"…or too basic. Something was missing. Why wasn’t there anything out there that allowed guys to be more stylish and fun without also sacrificing comfort, fit, and versatility? The more we thought about it, the more we realized that a romper hits all of these attributes—they can be dressed up or down and they’re unique, fashionable, and cool. But the one thing a romper didn’t have? A version for men. So we set out to fix that, and so much more."

One thing is for sure: with RompHim's closing, men's fashion just got a whole lot more boring! Rest in peace, RompHim! We hardly knew ya, but you will be missed!

Remember last year when I said that Call Me by Your Name star Timothée Chalamet was our king? I lied.

Look, Twinkathée is cool and all, but the original indie cinema heartthrob is here to reclaim his throne, and his name is Dev freakin' Patel.

The Oscar-nominated Lion actor (who I've personally loved since his days on Skins) is back on the scene in the trailer for A24's newest dark fantasy film The Green Knight. I have no idea what the hell is going on, but like Vulture's Hunter Harris noted, Dev is literally so hot he bursts into flames, and I can't stop looking away...

The Green Knight is set for a summer 2020 release. Watch the trailer below!

Locke & Key star Connor Jessup made it Instagram official with his boyfriend, 13 Reasons Why star Miles Heizer, in an adorable belated Valentine's Day selfie.

"I’m late but I love you, you’re good, you make me better, happy v+1 day," he wrote.

Fans couldn't be happier for the couple. "This makes me so happy :)," one wrote.

The two have appeared on each other's Instagram posts for a few months but neither had commented on their relationship until Sunday. It's unclear how long they've been dating.

Jessup came out during Pride Month last year in a touching Instagram post. "I don’t want to be complicit, even peripherally, in the idea that being gay is a problem to be solved or hushed," he wrote. "I’m grateful to be gay. Queerness is a solution."

Heizer has not publically commented on his sexuality but did appear in gay teen rom-com Love, Simon.

Congrats to the happy couple!

Why Is Bi Icon Li Shang Not in Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan'?

The film's producer explained why the beloved character was removed—and fans aren't happy about it.

Ever since it was announced, Disney's live-action retelling of their classic '90s animated feature Mulan has been wrapped up in controversy after controversy—and it looks like that won't be changing anytime soon.

First, it was the omission of the original film's much-beloved and catchy AF musical numbers and comedic dragon mascot Mushu. Next, it was actress Liu Yifei's pro-police comments about the increased turmoil and controversial pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. And now, thanks to comments made by one of the film's producers, fans are now accusing Disney of bisexual erasure.

In a recent interview with Collider, producer Jason Reed talked about the decision by the Mulan creative team to remove Li Shang (a character Disney fans have often regarded as a bisexual icon because of his attraction to Mulan when she was presenting as both male and female) from the film and the reasons why, citing...the #MeToo movement?

"We split Li Shang into two characters," Reed said. "One became Commander Tung (Donnie Yen) who serves as her surrogate father and mentor in the course of the movie. The other is Honghui (Yoson An) who is [Mulan’s] equal in the squad. […] I think particularly in the time of the #MeToo movement, having a commanding officer that is also the sexual love interest was very uncomfortable and we didn’t think it was appropriate."

While it's always good to be aware of the power dynamic between two characters, in the original animated film from 1998, Li never used his superior military ranking as a way to take advantage of Mulan (when she was and wasn't presenting as Ping), and the decision to remove him from the movie on that basis feels like a huge cop-out, especially for LGBTQ+ fans who have been looking forward to seeing him on screen.

For many, this feels just like another way Disney is trying to get rid of any LGBTQ+ subtext in one of it's most popular titles... *sigh*

After five years together, Scott Evans and Augustus Prew have to figure out the next stage of their relationship in upcoming rom-com Almost Love, written and directed by queer filmmaker Mike Doyle.

“There are not really movies out there where it’s just starting at that five-year point and you miss all the happy stuff," Evans told NewNowNext about the film. In Almost Love, the couples are "at the point of asking, ’Are we supposed to be together?’ You keep missing each other in a relationship, and it doesn’t get talked about, but you just get comfortable. You turn into roommates.”

The official description reads:

A romantic comedy about a group of friends navigating love, life, and relationships as they reach the mid-point. At the heart of the story is Adam (Scott Evans), a talented painter now stuck ghost painting for successful contemporary artist, Ravella Brewer (Patricia Clarkson). He and Marklin (Augustus Prew) are at the five-year mark of their relationship. They don't have kids, they're not married, and are face to face with the existential question “Is that all there is?”

Their friend circle is confronting the same question in a whole host of ways: Elizabeth (Kate Walsh), Adam’s best friend, is at the 15 year mark of her marriage, ready to bail when she discovers her husband’s inappropriate text relationship with a  younger woman; friend Cammy (Michelle Buteau) is dating Henry (Colin Donnell), but they never leave the house; Haley (Zoe Chao) is trying to figure out if her feelings for Scott James (Christopher Gray) are maternal or something more.

"Everyone’s a bit of a mess," the description concludes, "but at the same time eternally optimistic at finding new ways to make things work."

Almost Love premieres in theaters and on-demand on April 3. Watch the trailer below:

Fresh off of his recent viral performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Puerto Rican singer and passionate LGBTQ+ ally Bad Bunny is going on the record and opening about his sexuality.

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, the "I Like It" singer expressed how he doesn't want his sexuality to be a defining factor in his life, and how he, like many others, views it as something fluid.

"It does not define me," he said about his sexuality and what the future may hold for him in terms of attraction. "At the end of the day, I don’t know if in 20 years I will like a man. One never knows in life. But at the moment I am heterosexual and I like women."

The 25-year-old made headlines late last week when he made a big, pro-LGBTQ+ statement during an appearance on The Tonight Show.

During the performance of his song "Ignorantes," Bad Bunny (who was also wearing a skirt) opened up his blazer to reveal a shirt that reads, "Mataron a Alexa, no a un hombre con falda," which in Spanich translates to, "They killed Alexa, not a man in a skirt."He explicitly called out how the Puerto Rican media misgendered Neulisa Alexa Luciano Ruiz (a homeless 29-year-old black trans woman who was recently murdered after being harassed by a group of men) with various news and police reports incorrectly labeling her "a man dressed in a black skirt."

With this new insight into his own sexuality, as well as his passion for activism, Bad Bunny is quickly becoming the perfect example of the kind of ally the global LGBTQ+ community needs right now.

If you've missed seeing twin actors Charlie and Max Carver in action ever since MTV's supernatural teen drama Teen Wolf ended back in 2017, then we've got some good news for you! The brotherly duo is going to make an appearance in Gotham City very, very soon!

According to a report from The AV Club, the heartthrobs just got cast in Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman film which, if you didn't already know, already has a stacked cast that includes Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight himself, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman), Colin Farrell  (swoon!!!) as The Penguin, and Andy Serkis as trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth.

It's unclear exactly which roles Charlie and Max will be taking on (since the highly-anticipated DC Comics flick is currently in production and so many details about the film are being kept under strict lock and key) but The AV Club does point out that the rumor is the two will be playing either  Tweedledum and Tweedledee or the Trigger Twins.

Charlie (who publicly came out as gay in January of 2016 and is one of the stars of Ryan Murphy's upcoming film adaption of The Boys in the Band) and his supportive, identical brother Max had a lasting impact on viewers ever since they portrayed Ethan and Aiden on Teen Wolf, so to see the two back in action together will be a real treat for many superhero fans!

The Batman is set for release in 2021.

Is Last Ferry the thrilling gay suspense film we've been waiting for???

No matter how well in advance you plan them and no matter how excited you are for them, sometimes trips can go bad. Like, really, really bad. You might lose half your luggage on the way to your destination. You might get sick during all your traveling in public spaces. You might realize that you didn't save enough money for all the expenses you need. And in the case of Last Ferry, you might accidentally witness a murder.

Netflix's latest gay-themed thriller, which premiered last year and was an official selection of the BFI Flare LGBTQ+ film festival, takes place in New York state's infamous Fire Island Pines, a beach destination and vacation paradise for many gay travelers.

When a young, gay man named Joseph (Ramon O. Torres) travels to Fire Island during the offseason looking for a fun time (and maybe even love), what he gets instead is being the unlucky witness to a deadly crime. From the look of the trailer, Joseph is able to escape the clutches of the murderer and finally hits it off with a group of friends, only to be back on the murderer's radar. (Yikes!)

All the intrigue and suspense, paired with the intensity and chemistry of the admittedly attractive AF cast is definitely enough to get us intrigued, although we probably won't be taking a trip to Fire Island during the offseason any time soon...

Watch the trailer for Last Ferry in the video below. And catch the film when it hits Netflix this week on March 11!

The COVID-19 pandemic might have people all over the world self-quarantining in their homes and avoiding any unnecessary physical/social contact, but that doesn't mean communities can't still come together in other ways!

Such was the case when Alberto Gestoso, a Barcelona-based pianist and artist, decided to set up his keyboard on his apartment balcony and perform a beautiful (and emotional) interpretation of Céline Dion's iconic theme song from the Titanic film, "My Heart Will Go On," for a bunch of his neighbors.

British rugby player Joe Marler is in hot water after publicly groping opponent Alun Wyn Jones' crotch during a game this past weekend.

According to BBC News, Marler (who plays for the English national rugby team) was served a 10-week ban from the sport after he grabbed Wales team captain Jones' genitals, an offense that went unnoticed by referees but was caught on camera.

"There's no place for that in the game," Wales coach Wayne Pivac said in a statement. "We're all role models for the young players and the next generation of the game, and there are rules in the game."

He continued:

"You can't go outside those rules. If you do, then you face punishment."

At a press conference following the game, Jones addressed the incident, saying "It’s tough, isn’t it? Hopefully World Rugby have a look at it."

"Joe’s a good bloke, lots of things happen on a rugby field," he continued. "It’s difficult as a captain these days because you can’t speak to a ref about anything, it feels. I look at the touch judge. Obviously he didn’t see what happened, and that’s fine. There’s a lot of footage that has been shown. It seems like a lot of supporters saw what happened."

Marler himself also addressed the controversy on Twitter, calling his punishment "Bollocks. Complete bollocks." but as expected, many rugby fans were quick to let him know that what he did was a serious offense. (He has since deleted his account.)

We have to admit, ever since we saw him light up the screen as Constance Wu's love interest in Crazy Rich Asians, we have been kinda, sorta, totally, really obsessed with British-Malaysian actor Henry Golding.

While he's gone on to do (super hetero) projects like Last Christmas and The Gentleman, it looks like the leading man is now taking on a queer role in Peccadillo Pictures' upcoming film Monsoon, and from the looks of the recently-released trailer (where he kisses his co-star Parker Sawyers), there's gonna be tons of drama and emotion.

"Monsoon is a rich and poignant reflection on the struggle for identity in a place where the past weighs heavily on the present," the official description of the film reads. "Kit (Henry Golding, Crazy Rich Asians) returns to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time since he was six years old when his family fled the country in the aftermath of the Vietnam-American war. Struggling to make sense of himself in a city he’s no longer familiar with, he embarks on a personal journey across the country that opens up the possibility for friendship, love, and happiness."

With all that's going on in the world, we're not sure when the film will get a worldwide release, but it's set to debut in the UK soon, so hopefully it won't be too long until we get to see King Henry's handsome face back on the big screen!

While a lot of people like to think that love comes before marriage, oftentimes it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes people get married because of different pressures and expectations put on them by society and their families—but that doesn't mean you can't find love in this kind of situation. Such was the case with one Redditor who shared his touching AF love story to r/relationships that has since gone hugely viral.

To make a long story short, a 29-year-old gay businessman married his 26-year-old family friend (who happens to be a trans man) out of convenience so that both of their traditional Asian families would leave them alone and let them live their lives. The two moved in together, agreeing to do their own thing, but as the time has gone on, the two started getting closer and closer to each other. And now, the 29-year-old is starting to fall more and more in love with his husband. (We know, this unconventional, whirlwind romance it too cute for words, and we literally can't handle how cute it all is!!!)

The businessman took to Reddit to ask for advice on what to do and he was met with an onslaught of support.

"Talk to him. Tell him what you’re feeling. Ask if he feels the same way," one commenter offered up as advice. "Let him know that you’re open to having a more intimate relationship (note: I don’t mean necessarily sexual. Intimacy is much more than sex). It seems he’s feeling something too since he’s cuddling you. Communication is everything. Just close your eyes and jump, man. You got this."

"I am so hooked on this story, I need all the updates. Sorry to hear you are so stressed but my god does it make a good movie, I have butterflies for you," wrote another. "You mentioned you’re not good at talking about emotion but you are a gestures and actions kind of person, is there anything you can do that would be romantic for the two of you? Like maybe make a dinner date while being stuck indoors. If you have taken his signals (which from your post, he’s totally into you) the wrong way you could pass it off as just a nice thing to do for roommate/friend kind of thing. I know you are stressing but please keep us updated. Best of luck. We’re all rooting for you."

People on Twitter were also rooting for the married pair to start falling in love with each other:

If Hollywood needs an idea for the new epic, queer romance film of the century, THIS. IS. IT.

Transgender people have always existed, but from the average history class, you wouldn’t know it. These five pioneers are just a handful of trans men in history who made waves—from a revolutionary tuberculosis researcher to a powerful gospel singer.

1) Billy Tipton

American jazz musician and bandleader Billy Tipton started his career as the leader of a band playing on KFXR. He went on to tour the Midwest, play a two-year run at Joplin’s Cotton Club with George Meyer’s band, and tour the Pacific Northwest with George Meyer. In Longview, Washington, Tipton started the Billy Tipton Trio. Tipton was scouted by a talent agent in Santa Barbara, Calif. from Tops Records, and the Trio recorded two albums of jazz standards, which sold well for an independent record label. Tipton also performed skits on the vaudeville circuit, imitating celebrities like Liberace and Elvis Presley.

He also had several long-term relationships, including one with Kitty Kelly, a nightclub dancer. Though Kitty was lacking in the parenting department (she abused her adopted sons), Tipton was an involved father who loved to go on Boy Scout camping trips with his sons. Tipton died at age 74, and while paramedics were trying to revive Tipton, one of his sons learned he was transgender.

2) Alan L. Hart

transgender history

Alan L. Hart was an American radiologist, physician, and tuberculosis researcher who pioneered the use of x-ray photography in tuberculosis detection. The tuberculosis screening programs he implemented saved countless lives. Hart was also one of the first documented transgender men to undergo surgical transition in the United States at the University of Oregon Medical School. Hart married Inez Stark, but when a medical school classmate outed him, the resulting blow to his career and financial strain took a toll on their marriage and she left him in 1923.

His second marriage to Edna Ruddick in 1925 lasted until the end of Hart’s life. After obtaining a master’s in public health from Yale, Hart moved with Edna to Connecticut, and she became a professor at the University of Hartford as he continued his work to fight TB. In addition to his medical research, Hart was a prolific writer. He published four novels and a number of short stories. (Photo via Wikimedia Commons.)

3) Willmer "Little Axe" Broadnax

Willmer Broadnax was a gospel quartet singer, known for his powerful tenor voice. He performed as a lead singer of Five Trumpets alongside future Soul Stirrer Paul Foster. Broadnax later joined the Spirit of Memphis Quartet, which recorded for King Records. He also worked with the Fairfield Four, and the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. He headed a quartet called Little Axe and the Golden Echoes which released singles on Peacock Records. After his death in 1992, it was discovered Broadnax was transgender. Broadnax’s older brother, "Big Axe" Broadnax, was aware and stood by and sang with his brother.

4) Charley Parkhurst

Also known as One-Eyed Charley, Charley Parkhurst was an American farmer, rancher, and stagecoach driver in California. He was born in New England and raised in an orphanage, but ran away and took the name Charley. He followed the Gold Rush out west and built a reputation as one of the finest stage coach drivers on the West Coast. Parker was only outed after death. (Photo via Wikimedia Commons.)

5)  Lou Sullivan

American author and activist Lou Sullivan is known for his trans rights activism, and for identifying as gay and trans. Sullivan was the editor of The Gateway newsletter produced by the Golden Gate Girls/Guys (later the Gateway Gender Alliance). He also wrote several guides for trans men, lobbied the American Psychiatric Association and World Professional Association for Transgender Health to remove sexual orientation from the criteria for gender identity disorder, and was a founding member of the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco.

"People tend to celebrate these queer aesthetics from a very decidedly heterosexual male as opposed to celebrating the queer people who originate them."

Last week, Latin trap star Bad Bunny dropped a bombshell of a music video for "Yo Perreo Sola" where he gets in full drag, grinds on himself, and effectively pissed off queerphobic people around the world.

The notorious rule-breaker and outspoken LGBTQ+ ally currently identifies as straight but has spoken up for our community over and over again, whether it's swatting away haters of his glossy acrylic nails or honoring a slain Puerto Rican trans woman on Jimmy Fallon. His new album is aptly titled YHLQMDLG, an acronym that translates to "I do whatever I want."

In the latest episode from the Only Stans podcast, music industry obsessives Ryan and Taylor start a conversation on whether the video is queerbaiting, an appropriation of LGBTQ+ culture, or if Bad Bunny's kicking open the door for wider acceptance of queer aesthetics—and eventually the people behind them.

As Ryan points out, "People tend to celebrate these queer aesthetics from a very decidedly heterosexual male as opposed to celebrating the queer people who originate them and live these sort of ideals in their day to day lives."

"There's definitely something to be said of the fact that Bad Bunny is willing to risk the ire of traditionalists by putting on some titties and a dress," Ryan continues. "While also acknowledging that yes, it does come across as a little bit more palatable."

Taylor agrees, but wonders if this is just the process oppressed groups have to navigate to be celebrated in the same way. "A part of being accepted into the mainstream is that the people who are already in the mainstream have to do it first," he says. "We can go all the way back to Elvis and other people who snatched things from Black culture while the people who were doing it weren't getting credit for it."

Not to say Bad Bunny is snatching anything from anyone, but Taylor wonders if "that has to happen for the people who are actually creating to get their moment. That's what I feel like is happening right now. All these straight guys are borrowing from queer culture because it's cool and it's something people haven't seen before. It's annoying for us because we've been around it."

He then compares two artists with very similar aesthetics but whose careers have different trajectories. "I feel like this has to happen for the Troye Sivans of the world to actually get a fighting chance in the industry. Because why is Lauv so much more popular than Troye Sivan?" he asks. "I could be upset that Lauv is borrowing all these queer aesthetics but I'm hoping it's going to open the door."

Loyal Law & Order: SVU stans, you're eyes do not deceive you: Christopher Meloni really is reprising the iconic role of Detective Elliot Stabler! And as if that wasn't good enough news, the reason he's returning is because he's getting his very own spin-off series!!!

According to a report from Variety, NBC has just ordered 13-episodes of a Stabler-focused series from Law & Order creator and exec. producer Dick Wolf, with Meloni set to star in the main, titular role. The show, which will follow the popular detective as he leads the NYPD's organized crime division, marks the first time in nine years that Meloni will be portraying the character that many fans all over the world associate him with. He had previously left SVU in 2011 after negotiations between NBC about his pay broke down

In his time away from the Law & Order universe, Meloni has been a part of a diverse spectrum of film and TV projects, including White Bird in a Blizzard, The Handmaid's Tale, Harley Quinn, and on Ryan Murphy's groundbreaking trans-inclusive FX series Pose where he played Elektra's sugar daddy.

But as expected, stans were absolutely ecstatic to hear of Daddy Detective Stabler's epic return to the small screen!

No word on yet on when this new Stabler series is set to premiere, but hopefully, considering fans have been waiting ages for his Law & Order comeback, it won't be long!
